How much money Buc-ee’s owner has donated to Gov. Abbott, Texas Republicans

Arch “Beaver” Aplin III, owner of Texas-based gas station chain Buc-ee’s, has backed the Texas GOP for some time, even publicly supporting members of the state’s Republican party. In 2014, some Texans were upset (there was even talk of a boycott) after Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick boasted about having Aplin’s support after his primary election win.

But now, a Texan’s recent look into Aplin’s financial support of the GOP has some considering a boycott.

Earlier this month, a woman named Julie Zweig warned Texans in a Facebook post about Aplin’s donations to various members of the Texas Republican party, sharing how much money he’s given to the GOP since 2015. The numbers are publicly available by Transparency USA, a database that discloses money in relation to state politics.

According to the database, Aplin has given to 20 Republican PACs, including Patrick, Gov. Greg Abbott, Attorney General Ken Paxton, Speaker of the Texas House Dade Phelan, and former speaker Dennis Bonnen.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Aplin has given the most to Abbott: $1,025,000 to be exact.

Donations to other PACs range from $1,000 to $375,000.

Since July 14, Aplin has donated $490,000. More than half of those donations have gone toward Abbott’s PAC.

Concerned Texans shared their thoughts on the matter, with many calling for a boycott of the chain.

To be fair, Aplin’s favoritism toward Texas Republicans is not one-sided.

In August, Abbott appointed Aplin to the new ERCOT Board Selection Committee, which makes recommendations on appointments to ERCOT’s board.

The CEO has served on the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission since November 2018, and was promoted to the chair for the commission just this year.

Though Buc-ee’s continues to proudly proclaim having the cleanest restrooms on its website and share news of store openings across its social media pages, it has not addressed the resurgence in boycott chatter.
